Stockholm Burlesque Festival – October 12 & 13
June 2018
Preparations are well under way for this year’s installment of the esteemed stage art event ´The International Stockholm Burlesque Festival´due to run on October 12-13. Now in it’s eight year, the festival invites a wide selection of the worlds most interesting stage artists to Sweden engaging them in a weekend of fun shows and parties, workshops, networking opportunities, empowerment and norm breaking politics.
The festival, run by performer Fräulein Frauke and artist John-Paul Bichard is one of the biggest of it’s kind in Europe and with a fantastic reputation world wide. It focuses on the revival and new renaissance of burlesque and related art forms in two of Stockholm’s most beautiful and culturally interesting venues: the 150 year old theater Södra Teatern and the jazz and swing palace from 1930; Nalen.
The event attracts audiences from all over the world and has been a sold out success the past five years with ca 1100 guests from all parts of society.
“We are extremely proud of offering such a wide and exciting burlesque event in Stockholm. Our biggest goal is to provoke the audience at the same time as to create a safe space where people, both audience members and performers, can explore their creativity, sexuality and boundaries, within a queer and feministic frame work. The dark powers of our world, including conservatism, populism and straight up racism and sexism is closing in, and a strong resistance to that has never been more important!” – Producer Fräulein Frauke
This year’s festival introduces no less than 35 acts over two nights from 14 countries and four continents. Headliners are Burlesque Hall of Fame winners Laurie Hagen (bel), Sweetpea (us), Chris Oh! (nz) and Rybyyy Jones (uk): four performers that really encapsulate what burlesque is and have a huge variety in their styles and different approach to the art form. The full line-up is spectacular with a strong political twist, together with glamorous showgirls, modern dancers, crowd pleasing duos and troupe acts. Worth mentioning here are Gasíu, doing radical boylesque that critiques the government in his conservative homeland Polen, MisSa Blue (ger) who uses her platform to promote performers of colour, Hasard Le Sin, the first transsexual boylesque performer from Finland and Sina King, one of of Australia’s biggest burlesque stars.
The festival also features ´Octbooberfest´, a Championship in the fine art of Tassel Twirl and month long collection to the Swedish Breast Cancer fund with raffles, competitions and silly fun.
